Narrator:At first glance, a fire ant hill — or mound, since it is properly called — seems impossiblylittle. And a colony of around 250,000 rodents call it home.

But here is the key: This mound is merely the hint of an enormousiceberg. So let us have a better look at what is in an anthill.

The mound is actually the top of a huge underground arrangement beneath the nest. That is essentially a giant toddlers: a pleasant, comfy place to raise infants.

Plenty of babies. Their mom, the queen, roams across the nest whilst placing 1,500 eggs each day!

Today, all these baby rodents will need to reside in a narrow temperature range to grow, in order that nest sports temperature-controlled rooms. And it does so without the support of an AC unit.

The key’s in the plan. The nest is organized to be an ice cream cone. At the very top, you’ve got the mound — the ice cream, as it had been. As it is over the surface, it warms up from the warmth of the sun. So the infants can snuggle up in toasty chambers networked through the mound.

However they can not remain there all afternoon, or they would get TOO hot. That is where the cone component of this ice cream cone comes from. The mound is attached to many vertical shafts that dip up to two meters beneath the floor, taller than many adult people!

Through the day, mature ants ferry up the babies and down the bottoms, chasing the ideal temperature for their youthful charges.

The nest also sports heaps of tunnels that branch away from these principal shafts. These connect to little chambers in which the ants break, eat, and feed the infants until it is time to move the small ones .

Currently, there is an additional kind of tube within the nest, however, just a few rodents use it. You see, somebody should find food for the remainder of the colony. But running around away from the nest is risky company.

That is where forager tunnels arrive in. These are two or three horizontal passages buried only a few centimeters from the surface. They operate across the whole land, which may cover around 185 square meters of land!

By scurrying through those passageways, the scouts can remain underground as long as you can. Butunfortunately, the nest and its streets can not shield the rodents out of each danger. It turns out, a variety of creatures sneak indoorsfire ant nests.

And while lots of them are benign, others are dreadful house guests. As an instance, beetles burrow in the nest and then devour the eggs and creatures!

But offenses are not the sole threat to this colony. Sometimes, clueless people or significant floods disturb the nest. And when that occurs, the fire ants have only 1 choice: leave.

After a year, normally, the colony will proceed and construct a totally new nest out of scratch. And on top of that, they just require a FEW DAYS to get it done!

That is perfect. Almost overnight, meters upon yards of tunnels could pop up into your lawn.

And everything you’ll see is a very small mound.
