EXCLUSIVE: A24 is going into the EFM in Berlin using Joaquin Phoenix’s first film post-Joker.

As we showed late last season, the untitled play was written and directed by 20th Century Women and Beginners filmmaker Mike Mills. A24 is financing and producing and will establish earnings next week. The job is very likely to be in-demand.

Oscar-winner Phoenix will play with an artist made to look after his precocious young nephew since they forge an unexpected bond on a cross country excursion.

Also exhibits are Gaby Hoffman (Transparent), Woody Norman (Poldark) and Kenneth Kynt Bryan (Claws). The project, budgeted at the 10m range, recently wrapped in New Orleans.

Producers are Chelsea Barnard (Booksmart), Lila Yacoub (Eighth Grade) and Andrea Longacre-White (20th Century Women). Robbie Ryan (The Favorite ) is DoP. We hear that a script is scheduled to be shipped out to buyers this week.

Phoenix is coming off rave reviews and a range of awards season accolades for his startling performance in Joker. We realize the celebrity’s new job will also touch on mental disease since the boy’s father struggles with bipolar illness.

A24 are also in the EFM using David Lowery’s Green Knight, which can be in post-production. A re-telling of this medieval fantasy epic of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the film celebrities Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie and Barry Keoghan.

Release is scheduled for May 29 from the States. A24 financed by Ley Line and BRON Creative and Peter Jackson’s Weta Digital was functioning on the special effects. We can show that Entertainment Film Distributors pre-bought the movie for the United Kingdom.
