BBC Nabs Dickensian-Period Clever Dodger Comedy From NBCUniversal Worldwide Studios
EXCLUSIVE: The BBC is heading again to the Dickensian-era for its newest household comedy. The British public broadcaster has ordered Dodger from NBCUniversal Worldwide Studios.
The sequence is a household journey comedy set in 1830s Dickensian London and tells the story of the Clever Dodger, the notorious pickpocket character from Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist.
The character, whose title was Jack Dawkins, is the chief of a gang of kid criminals, skilled by Fagin. He was described by Dickens as a “snub-nosed, flat-bowed, common-faced boy” with the “airs and manners of a person”.
