Bebe Rexha, Kelsea Ballerini, Cyndi Lauper Promote Harmony into Counter Gender Bias
Bebe Rexha hosted female musicians, songwriters and producers in Los Angeles music business hotspot Craig’s for her third yearly Women in Harmony pre-Grammy brunch on Friday.
The star-studded guest list contained Cyndi Lauper, Kelsea Ballerini, Tinashe, Jordin Sparks, Dinah Jane, Natasha Bedingfeld, Sabrina Carpenter, Zhavia, Lindsey Stirling, JoJo, Daya, Becky G, Bea Miller, Ashlee Simpson, Betty Who, Madison Beer and hitmakers Bonnie McKee, Madison Love, Lauren Christy, Alex Hope and Jozzy, Amongst Others. Also in attendance in the women-only occasion (with the exclusion of safety guards in the door) was director Sarah Stennett, whose Initial Access Entertainment representatives Rexha, Ross and many others.
“This event is so important for me since I wished to offer different songwriters and up and coming songwriters something that I never needed: an environment which I felt secure in,” Rexha informed Variety. “For me personally it makes it a whole lot scarier when you’re in the music industry and you’re advised to become more aggressive with other female celebrities, which can be such bullshit. What this does is it normalizes most people being in a room together… it makes us humanize each other and we ought to all be on precisely the exact same group, and that I never needed this. I’d had an occasion such as this and that I never needed anyone I could talk to.”
Rexha drove home that message in an impassioned address to her guests. Said Rexha:”The purpose of Girls in Harmony for me personally would be to tackle the staggering inequality. And there are many badass bitches in here, and it is 1 thing about saying I’m about female empowerment, so ” I think in girls, and I wish to help girls, but it is another thing really showing up and being in this chamber.”
Rexha spoke openly of all-too-common problems of male executives dictating the way the female performer is supposed to look, sound, or function.

“Executives explained that I was too old; I’ve had people tell me that I needed to shed 20 lbs and enter boot camp contour since that is exactly what pop stars are assumed to perform,” she explained. “You aren’t alone and all of us feel insecure and all of us feel awful and not good enough and that’s bull shit since we’re those items. We”re lovely right?”

“In case you’re not pleased with the circumstance, then you’ve got to produce a new scenario,” explained Lauper. “When the record business isn’t a ideal match, then you create a new record business. I struggled my entire life and I had been called a large pain in the bum because I had my own thoughts, and I got in trouble a bit, since it is possible to observe the way my career went. However, I kept taking turns, then I diversified, and it’s simpler to diversify since the gatekeepers become perplexed. The truth is that our job as artists is simply to keep producing regardless of what. If you have a gatekeeper before you who’s saying no more, then you’ve got to modify your position and constantly look beyond. Hold tight to your eyesight and stick to it. Men consistently get another burst or there. We create ours. When it’s incorrect, change it. Should you want a new group, make one”
Lauper later praised Rexha to Variety. “She has a great deal of spunk,” said the singer and activist. “I believe sisterhood is a strong thing.”
Her guidance to female musicians in 2020? ) “Just keep the station open and maintain working,” explained Lauper. “Keep moving forward no matter what. If a person tells you no more, perhaps that is for them rather than for you.”
Rexha also resisted the understanding that girls are constantly pitted against each other. This season’s event, by way of instance, celebrated up-and-coming artist Joy Morales, an artist who received a financial shot in the arm out of Rexha that allowed her to finish her Kickstarter effort and launch a brand new EP.
Ballerini created her announcement song, doing her new single,”Homecoming Queen,” with lyrics that adopt female vulnerability.
“it’s essential to celebrate girls manufacturers, girls songwriters, girls artists which are helping create the graphs a bit more equal,” Ballerini informed Variety, praising Rexha for an function that calls”equality on tv and records and credits and all us who work our asses off to make it happen.”
This month, Ballerini known for a change at the long-running clinic in radio to not play with two female musicians back. “I moved ,” she explained. “I’ve been silent about it for long since I’m one of those lucky few that really does get played on state radio and that I do not wish to seem ungrateful, but I feel that it is my job for a girl that really does have a voice in state radio to stand around to the men and women who do not. Just how are the young women listening to the radio now likely to understand they may be a country singer or a pop singer if they don’t have somebody to obey?”

Fifth Harmony alum Dinah Jane, that has fresh music along with a tour intended for 2020, expounded on this notion, telling Variety,”I really like that we’re encouraging one another. This business is always greatly run by guys. We’re here celebrating our expansion.” Being a man of colour, she continued:”I’m a Egyptian girl and it is quite unheard of to listen to a girl in audio of my ethnicity conducting the match. Bebe and Jordin Sparks are here… to be standing here with these cultural ladies, I am here to represent. That is larger than me”
Sparks was also transferred by Lauper’s words, imagining that women only want fun, but also make an impact.
“She left points that were amazing, and also to hear that from someone who has been doing it for such a long time. . To hear from her, particularly if we’re here, all of different ages and most of us have the very same targets. We ought to make creative audio and touch individuals and have fun while we do this, and also to have somebody like Cyndi state that in this entire room where we could hear it and watch her perform it was really strong for me personally,” said , new from a Broadway run and preparing fresh music for launch. “I was really thankful that Bebe encouraged me to the event now. It has been a minute since I’ve been at a room filled with beautiful, strong girls and I just feel good. That is exactly what people will need to view, the girls in the market talking, chatting, having a fantastic time. She made a fantastic point about people being pitted against each other and it is not actually they situation. It is what folks want to state. But I am quite honored to be part of the. Be in a position to observe these women, and have java and have the ability to talk and get together and measure together.”

Offered Sabrina Carpenter:”Music is love, therefore I believe that everybody in this area who enjoys music and enjoys making music-you can not get much better than that. It is so good that Bebe is encouraging it, particularly at that time of year when there is so much rivalry, it is Wonderful to take a step back and Keep in Mind we are all working towards our dreams”
Zhavia, who attended the occasion with RECORDS and Arista A&R executive Jenna Andrews, took advantage of the chance to network. “There are a great deal of amazing producers and authors here which could help me with my songs,” she explained.

Love stated being in the area felt as a”we’re all together and we’ve got a family outside songwriting.” This was particularly significant in light of Rexha’s earlier remarks that she finds herself as the only girl in the room, be it through meetings or sessions.
“I’m also the only woman in many rooms composing for rap sessions and other musicians,” said Love, among those all-female contributors to Selena Gomez’s all-female-produced, -composed and -engineered”Unusual.”
Bel, an artist in Australia, stated that travel to L.A. to get Grammy Week was worth the excursion. “It’s wonderful to be in an event where girls are observing girls,” she explained. “I adore how Bebe’s desktop is at songwriting. She is an amazing songwriter and in the heart she’s an artist, and this entire event is all about girls and their multifaceted talents and the way we must boost the proportion of audio within this business.”
