Earlier Sunday, Luna stated that law enforcement was dealing with a "barricaded suspect situation" in Torrance. Officers stopped a white van at 10:20 a.m. local time on Sunday, according to Luna.
According to Luna, the van then pulled into a shopping center parking lot and police heard a single gunshot from inside. At 12:52 p.m., officers wearing tactical gear and armor approached the van and discovered the suspect dead.
Luna stated that a handgun was recovered from the van. News helicopters captured the dramatic scene involving the van, which included multiple armored vehicles positioned in front of, to the side of, and behind the van, as well as officers in fatigues and body armor at the rear of one of the police vehicles.
There are no other suspects, according to police, and no motive has been established. The shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park late Saturday night killed five men and five women and injured ten others, according to Luna. (An additional victim died later.) The suspect then entered the Lai Lai Ballroom in nearby Alhambra 20 to 30 minutes later.
Luna said earlier Sunday:
“„He walked in there with a firearm and some individuals wrestled the firearm away from him, and that individual took off.

Luna stated that the Alhambra location yielded a magazine-fed semiautomatic assault pistol with an extended large capacity magazine. He believes that type of weapon is illegal in California, but more "research" is required.
According to two law enforcement sources, investigators are conducting ballistic analysis of the weapon found at the scene in Alhambra to determine whether the weapon is linked to the Monterey Park shooting and whether the person was the same suspect.
Officers arrived on the scene of the Monterey Park shooting shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday in response to a call of shots fired and discovered 10 people injured outside the Star Dance Studio. They were taken to local hospitals, where seven remained as of Sunday night, according to Luna. Luna said Sunday night that the victims appeared to be at least 50 years old.
Luna announced on Sunday afternoon that a victim center had been established and urged anyone who suspected a family member had been at the dance hall to go.
The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives were on the scene assisting local police, and White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said President Biden had been updated on the shooting.
Mr. Biden said in a statement Sunday night:
“„Jill and I are thinking of those killed and injured in last night's deadly mass shooting in Monterey Par. While there is still much we don't know about the motive in this senseless attack, we do know that many families are grieving tonight, or praying that their loved one will recover from their wounds.
- President Joe Biden
Mr. Biden directed that flags be flown at half-staff until Thursday sunset. California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced his visit to Monterey Park on Instagram on Sunday.
Tran's ex-wife told CNN that she met Tran around 20 years ago at the Star Ballroom and that "while Tran was never violent to her... he could be quick to anger." According to CNN, "another long-time acquaintance of Tran's remembered him as a frequent presence at the dance studio."
Wong Wei, a local, told the Los Angeles Times that his friend was at the dance studio and was in the bathroom when the shooting started. When she came out of the bathroom, she saw a gunman and three bodies — two women and the studio's boss, according to him.
Final Words
Monterey Park is a city of about 60,000 people on the outskirts of Los Angeles. The majority of its inhabitants are Asian immigrants or their descendants, the majority of whom are Chinese.
The dance studio in downtown Monterey Park is just a few blocks from city hall on Garvey Avenue, which is dotted with strip malls filled with small businesses with signs in both English and Chinese.
Cantonese and Mandarin are widely spoken, Chinese holidays are observed, and Chinese films are shown throughout the city. The Monterey Park festival has been canceled for Sunday, according to officials.
