The Storyline Of Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai On Netflix
As the name indicates, Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai’s movie revolves around a middle-class Pillai family living in the middle-class Housing Society of Mumbai. Sarita Pillai (Saiyami Kher), the lady boss of the house, left her dream of becoming a singer and working as a cashier in a bank. On the other hand, her husband Sushant is unemployed, a struggling musician who plays carrom with his society friends to pass his time.
From managing the household work, taking care of Sameer’s (their son) study & her job at a bank, Sarita juggles financial crisis, but Reddy keeps hounding her for the money Sushant borrowed from him. This leads into petty fights between the couple, which is mostly resolved by their son Sameer, making their relationship bitter and compromising.
But one day, all their financial crisis ends when the chocked pipe of their kitchen starts spitting out neatly packed bundles of cash. Excited, Sarita doesn’t question the origin of the money and keeps hiding it in various corners of her house without telling her husband or son about it. But her greediness knows no limit, and she keeps collecting those bundles to fulfill her desires. Just when she thought her all problems will be solved quickly now, Government announce Demonetization, leaving her tense. While Sushant is happy about demonetization, Sarita and her neighbor, Sharvari, are worried and thinking about what to do with the cash they have.
How will Sarita handle this situation? Will Sushant learn about Sarita’s little secret? With so many questions, Choked makes you realize the importance of money and how many dreams can be choked without it.

With an engaging story and demonetization concept, Kashyap depicts iconic things like Acche Din, chip in the notes & long queues outside the bank & the behavior of the system towards the whole situation in a perfect manner. The story is very gripping and keeps you hooked from the beginning. By using narrow staircases and pale yellow walls with shredded paints, the makers perfectly portray the situation of a middle-class family in Mumbai.
The story is actually a reality check on all those people who comes to a city of dreams with some aspirations, but lack of money & opportunities choked their dreams, and they do everything for survival. In their tough times, the only hope and pleasure they get are by their companions/neighbors/friends with whom they can gossip & spend some time together. Just like Sarita used to do by going in Kitty parties of her society & Sushant does by playing carrom with his buddies.
Apart from Pillai Family, the movie portrays the life story of their neighbors as well, mainly Sharvari Tai and Sushant’s carrom buddy Dinesh. Friendly yet cunning Sharvari Tai keeps saving money for her daughter’s wedding, but things take an unexpected turn after demonetization. Marriage Contractor, caterer, and every vendor want their money, but all the funds Sharvari has is of no use now.
On the other hand, Sharvari now has to work for longer at the bank, and she is losing her calm both in her personal & professional life.
