Daredevil’s Inferno Brings WAR Into Hell’s Kitchen
Warning: SPOILERS for Daredevil #19
It’s a firefight in Hell’s Kitchen, as gang-war erupts within the streets and crooked supervillains storm the town with orders to burn it to the bottom, within the new Daredevil “Inferno” story arc from Marvel Comics. With the police unresponsive to crimes in progress, lawlessness results in outright atrocities as civilians are caught within the crossfire between the Owl’s brutal cartel, and the Libris’ crime household. When civil authorities fail to guard the general public, the neighborhood rises as much as quell the flames consuming Hell’s Kitchen in Daredevil #19.
Author Chip Zdarsky’s Daredevil has to this point developed into an uncompromising crime drama, with a corrupt police power complicit in nurturing an ungovernable state of vice and villainy, rival gangs participating in fierce turf-wars, and altogether detached to the dire penalties for the residents of Daredevil’s house of Hell’s Kitchen. With police underneath orders to not have interaction felony actions — and even probably the most minor of offenses, opportunistic gangs have taken their battle to the streets, as an arson squad of supervillains arrives to create an inferno in Hell’s Kitchen.

This lawless state is the need of The Stromwyns, a household of ultra-rich and influential patrons of the governor. It is the Stromwyns who’ve pressured the governor to cordon off Hell’s Kitchen, and get rid of any police presence throughout the precinct. Matt Murdock’s alter ego, the the satan of Hell’s Kitchen, is clearly outgunned, outmaneuvered, and overwhelmed within the newest situation of Daredevil. As gunfire rakes neighborhood houses, boutiques, and bodegas, and incendiary bombs ship flames and smoke billowing throughout the New York skyline, the magnitude of the chaos threatens to tear the town aside.
Caught between the crimelords of the Libris’ household and the maniacal Owl’s murderous cadre, Hell’s Kitchen appears misplaced when the sadistic supervillain Bullseye, Bullet the enforcer, the Rhino, and the mercenary Crossbones floor with orders to burn Hell’s Kitchen to ash. With the rule of legislation in flames, the neighborhood takes up arms towards the criminals, brandishing improvised weapons in defiance of the villains… with some citizen-vigilantes donning the masks of Daredevil, hero of Hell’s Kitchen.
The violence hits a fever-pitch when Bullseye weapons down a shopkeeper, because the hero shields a younger girl and her baby from the murderer, and one other would-be-vigilante — draped in a makeshift Daredevil costume — is mercilessly dispatched by Bullseye’s blades. It isn’t going to be straightforward to cease this nightmare, even for The Man With out Concern. unite to battle and take again their metropolis from villains intent on burning all of it down.
