Deadly fireworks warehouse explosion claims 10 lives in Thailand, including three innocent children. The incident also left more than 100 people injured, with the toll expected to rise. The town of Sungai Kolok witnessed the horrifying event, and its aftermath was marked by extensive destruction, impacting nearly 500 homes within a radius of approximately 1,640 feet from the warehouse, as reported by local broadcasting service Thai PBS.
The Public Relations Department of Narathiwat province confirmed that 118 individuals were wounded, and numerous others are currently trapped under debris, desperately awaiting rescue. According to the provincial governor, Sanan Pongaksorn, the tragedy was triggered by a chain reaction caused by a spark from a welder's equipment at an on-site construction project, leading to this heart-wrenching and unforeseen catastrophe.

At least 10 Killed, Over 100 Injured In A Deadly Explosion At A Fireworks Warehouse In Thailand

According to residents, a massive explosion was heard at approximately 15:00 local time (09:00 BST). Seksan Taesen, a resident living approximately 300 feet from the warehouse, recounted his terrifying experience to Agence France-Presse. “My whole house shook,” he said. “I looked outside and I saw houses collapsing and people lying on the ground everywhere. It was chaos.
Accidents involving fireworks in South East Asia are not uncommon, as they are frequently used in the region to celebrate significant occasions. Tragically, such incidents have caused devastating consequences in the past.
For instance, six years ago, a factory explosion in Indonesia claimed the lives of 49 people. As recently as five days ago, another incident occurred in northern Thailand, resulting in the death of one woman and injuries to 10 others.
Despite growing public pressure to enhance safety measures, Thailand continues to grapple with a poor track record of accidents, spanning from its roads and construction sites to workplaces. In Sungai Kolok, enforcement of regulations faces even greater challenges due to the town's notorious rowdiness and its location in a region still afflicted by an active armed insurgency.

Conclusion

The need for stringent safety measures remains imperative, especially in areas where the volatile mix of celebratory practices, lax enforcement, and underlying security concerns can lead to devastating consequences.
