Scam 1992- The Harshad Mehta Story web series starts with the journey of Harshad Mehta as a Jobber in Bombay Stock Exchange in 1979. The series revolves around his rags to riches story where a simple guy Harshad Mehta was living with his big dreams in a small apartment of Mumbai’s local chawl with his family. The dreams of Harshad was so big that he didn’t want to settle for less and decided to make money by hook or crook.
Just after his entry in BSE, he understood the whole game of Stock market with the help of Bhushan (fellow Jobber) and decided to play this game in his way. He wanted to be the Big Bull of Stock Market just like Manu Mundhra (or maybe bigger than him), and so he left his job to become a broker. He did everything that was considered illegal in the stock market, whether it is insider trading, or anything else. He started making good money by investing in the stock market as he was well-aware that how to make any share profitable or vice-versa. Soon he shifted from a small apartment to the big one with his family. But as the money rises, so is his greediness.
Harshad was ready to take huge risks to make more and more profits. According to everyone, to excel in the stock market, one needs to have four things: wisdom, experience, will power and passion. But Harshad added the fifth element to this and it was Crookedness. After facing a massive loss of 10 lacs in the market crash, Harshad didn’t stop and started his consultancy firm with the name of Growmore. Soon the people began to know him as the Bacchan of BSE. The wealth of Harshad Mehta keeps increasing, but this wasn’t enough for him. He wanted to earn more, and so he dives deeper into the money market to compete with foreign banks.
Just when Harshad was making his career in Stock & Money Market, Sucheta Dalal started her journey with Times of India as a financial journalist. Unimpressed with his illegitimate ways of money-making, she wanted to expose Harshad Mehta but had no proof against him. Harshad understood that only Money Market could make him the richest man, so he started approaching big banks like SBI, Canara, etc. for investment purposes. As he promised to give banks good deals& returns, banks collaborated with him, and he invested Bank Funds illegally in Stock Market to earn high returns. He made huge profits by increasing the share value of big companies like ACC, SPIC, Polo, etc.
But RBI started noticing irregularities in Bank Receipts and issued strict orders for all banks. This time, Banks refused to give Harshad Mehta clean credit, and Harshad arranged his funds using Government Securities bonds and utilities from ONGC and other big companies. Without caring about the consequences, he kept illegally making investments, and soon he became the highest taxpayer of India in 1990 with personal holdings worth 4000 crores at that time. Soon his activities came in notice when Sharad from SBI reported a huge scam of 500 Crores and Harshad’s involvement in this to Sucheta Dalal. The scandal uncovers the loophole of Indian Banking System and Harshad undergoes for the most prolonged investigation for the same by various government agencies.
