Fifteen years after the Second Impact, the Earth is confronted with a new threat: hideous heavenly entities known as "Angels" attack Tokyo-3 one by one. Despite the use of the most modern armaments and military strategies, humanity is unable to defend itself against the Angels. Humanity's sole hope for rescue is in the hands of NERV, a shadowy organization directed by the icy Gendou Ikari. Shinji Ikari, Gendou's 14-year-old son, comes to Tokyo-3 years after being abandoned by his father. Shinji's life is irrevocably transformed when he meets 29-year-old Misato Katsuragi, a high-ranking NERV officer who demonstrates a free-spirited mother tenderness he has never encountered. Shinji is forced into action by a deadly Angel attack, while Gendou reveals his actual motivation for calling his son back to Tokyo-3: Shinji is the only kid capable of controlling Evangelion Unit-01, a new robot that is biometrically compatible with him.

Released in 2007, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone is part of the "Rebuild of Evangelion" film series. This film is an enhanced, completely re-animated recap of episodes one through six. It adds scenes to give context and a wider scope of what's happening within the original episodes. There's also added information and alternative dialogue to the original scenes. Shinji Ikari awakens in a world he can not recall fourteen years after the third hit. He has not matured. Much of Earth has been demolished, Nerv has been deconstructed, and the people he once protected have turned on him. Shinji continues the struggle against the angels, befriending the intriguing Kaworu Nagisa, and discovers the war is far from done, even when it may be against his former comrades. The protagonists' tribulations continue in the midst of confrontations with angels and one another, sliding downward into what may eventually be the end of the world.
