It centers on William, a youthful squire adept in the art of jousting. He dons the armor following the terrible death of the knight in the middle of the match. As young William eventually decides to participate in jousting competitions in order to become a knight, he meets the enigmatic writer Geoffrey Chaucer, who becomes his Herald and forges Will's documents detailing his origins. Will gradually meets a stunning princess and confronts formidable opponents while navigating love, deception, and humbling occurrences that drive him to confront his lowly roots.
Ledger portrays William Thatcher, a 14th-century peasant. He aims to alter his situation in life by posing as a knight and engaging in jousting contests. William also pursues the favor of a beautiful noblewoman named Jocelyn with the assistance of his companions Roland and Wat.

The seven characters channel the various aspects of Dylan’s personality.
Ledger shines as Robbie Clark, a young man who discovers the joy of fame after portraying Jack Rollins in a historical drama. He is tied in a marriage he did not want so Ledger flirts with other women, including Robbie, which enrages his wife Claire and ultimately results in their divorce.

This film gave Ledger an Academy Award for his outstanding portrayal of the iconic "Joker". A lot of actors portrayed Joker in different films but still, Ledger's version of Joker is the most praised and recognized by people as "Joker". The marvelous performance of Heath as the Joker left goosebumps on the audience’s skin. Known for his method of acting, Ledger went to extreme lengths to blend into the role of the “psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy”.
