Let me just start with a couple disclaimers, because I know a few of you are mad at me only dependent on the headline . I consented to try the keto diet in early 2018 as a POPSUGAR editor experiment – not because I had to for medical or weight-loss factors. The aim was to see the way my body felt switching from a moderate-carb diet into a very, very low-carb, high-fat diet (spoiler: not great ). I had the perfect tools, including a clinical nutritionist versed in keto on speed dial along with a schedule with recipes along with lists of meals that I could and could not eat.
When the programs were made, I had anticipated completing a 30-day program. I shopped at Whole Foods to get lamb and steak, refined my Bulletproof coffee recipe, and learned orders in local restaurants that were keto-approved only in case (hello, Chipotle).
Things fell apart for me pretty much immediately. Perhaps I am a carb addict who requires a detox or perhaps this diet just was not for me – but I began to feel unwell at the conclusion of this first day. A succession of headaches surfaced in, which are common once you’re purging the body of carbohydrates. In cases like this, it’s called that the keto flu… and I obtained the keto influenza in the most peculiar way. My nourishment coach advised eating green apples and drinking plenty of tea, as well as adding in new herbs to my foods. This was supposed to mitigate the keto influenza, so I followed the advice.
A day after, despite taking those steps, the headaches were also still worsening\. I had been so, so tired and couldn’t concentrate on job (hello, brain fog); my colleagues even discovered how unsuccessful I was (awkward ). All I wanted to do was sleep! But I knew it was”regular” and keto flu could soon fade, so I pressed . I felt as a keto warrior and figured I only needed to break through the other hand, right?
Wrong. I wasn’t a keto warrior, but rather a keto disaster.

Days three consisted of the unending aggravation, all culminating in an 18-hour migraine finale; of course, I hit the carbohydrate-packed fear button real quick at the point. I determined the experiment and diet trial weren’t worth the pain that I went through with keto flu – I didn’t wish to lose weight, and that I did not want the ketogenic diet to treat any medical condition. So yeah, I gave up.
inhaled ate a bagel in the afternoon of day six, and it felt like a wave of aid over me. Very best bagel of my entire life\.
After I resumed eating my typical carb-infused yet balanced diet, I was somewhat worried that I’d”balloon,” because many folks do after attempting keto temporarily. ‘Twasn’t the situation, friends. The only thing that I obtained after adding carbs back in was insomnia relief. Sweet, sweet migraine relief.
So yeah. I tried; I neglected. Some people thrive on this diet – I have found it firsthand! But bear in mind that no 1 diet is perfect for each and every individual’s body. Listen to your body, also work with a doctor and nurse or dietitian you aspire to make sure that you’re not placing yourself through hell for no reason. And yes, I feel a lifetime without carbohydrates is my personal hell.
