As the death toll on both sides of the conflict rises, Israel bombards Gaza. On Tuesday, the death toll in the Israel-Hamas conflict continued to escalate, four days after Hamas militants launched a surprise attack on Israel from Gaza, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to declare, "We are at war."

The attack, which cost more than 1,000 people, including 14 Americans, was described by President Biden as "an act of sheer evil." Mr. Biden stated that American citizens are also among those held captive by Hamas, which administers the Gaza Strip and has been designated by the United States as a terrorist organization for decades.

The president stated in remarks delivered from the White House on Tuesday that the people of Israel had suffered "pure, unadulterated evil" at the "bloody hands" of Hamas.

Parents butchered using their bodies to try to protect their children, the president said. Stomach-turning reports of babies being killed. Entire families slain. Young people massacred while attending a musical festival to celebrate peace. ... Women raped, assaulted, paraded as trophies.- President Biden

"In this moment, we must be crystal clear: We stand with Israel. We stand with Israel," he said. "And we will make sure Israel has what is needed to take care of its citizens, take care of itself, and respond to this attack. There's no justification for terrorism. There's no excuse."

IDF foreign spokesperson Lt. Col. (Res.) Jonathan Conricus told CBS News on Monday that 2,500 other people were reported injured in addition to those who were murdered in Israel. Israelis who were attacked at the Supernova music festival close to the Gaza border when militants opened fire on the crowd made up more than 250 of the fatalities.

Additionally, according to Israeli sources, more than 100 hostages, including women, children, and elderly people, were taken as hostages into Gaza by Hamas fighters.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, at least 900 individuals, including at least 140 children, have been killed in the Gaza Strip as a result of Israel's retaliatory bombings. There have been at least 4500 injuries.

Nearly 50 years to the day after the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the coordinated, multi-front attack on Israel from Gaza signaled a catastrophic escalation in the protracted Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Israel's US Ambassador Suggests Worldwide Pressure On Hamas To Release Hostages

Michael Herzog, Israel's ambassador to the US, pleaded with the international community to exert pressure on Hamas to free the hostages it has abducted.

We ask the international community to call upon Hamas to release them unconditionally because taking hostages is a war crime, Herzog said in a an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins.- Michael Herzog, Israel's ambassador to the US

Herzog admitted that authorities are still working to gain a thorough grasp of the number, makeup, and situation of the hostages. He acknowledged that there are Israelis, Americans, and other countries among the hostages.

Herzog admitted that he wasn't certain whether any hostages had died.

Herzog stated that given that the border with Israel is completely closed, they are working with Egyptian and US authorities to help facilitate the safe withdrawal of these people from Gaza.

The border between Israel and Gaza is closed – this is a warzone, Herzog said. We are under no legal obligation to provide them with anything save for the basic humanitarian needs for sustenance. We comply with international law.- Michael Herzog, Israel's ambassador to the US

Israel continues to act within the bounds of international law. The envoy went on to add that Hamas had damaged 10 power lines that brought energy from Israel into Gaza, among other critical infrastructure.
