EXCLUSIVE: Hours after building Oscar background on Parasite‘s double Best Picture and Best International Film Oscar, NEON has closed a deal for its Sundance buzz name Shirley. Deal is for North American faith and proceeded for non seven-figures.
Directed by Josephine Decker from a script by Sarah Gubbins, the film stars Elisabeth Moss, Michael Stuhlbarg, Odessa Young, and Logan Lerman. Pic tells the story of what happens when a young couple goes in together with the famed writer, Shirley Jackson, along with her Bennington College scientist husband, Stanley Hyman. The youthful couple hopes to begin a fresh life but rather find themselves fodder to get a psycho-drama that ignites Shirley’s next book.
Pic premiered at the U.S. Dramatic Competition, also premiered Saturday January 25 in Eccles. The film was funded by Los Angeles Media Fund, also produced by Christine Vachon, David Hinojosa, Sue Naegle, Sarah Gubbins, and LAMF’s Jeffrey Soros and Simon Horsman.
Paradigm and UTA Independent brokered the deal, and Cornerstone is promoting global.
NEON needed a powerful Sundance. Tom Quinn’s distribution spree arrived to the festival with a pre-buy of this Saoirse Ronan-Kate Winslet-starrer Ammonite, also teamed with Hulu for its festival record-breaking $22 million bargain for Palm Springs.
