The ‘self-declared sanctuary city’ LA receives first busloads of migrantsfrom Texas Gov. Greg Abbott The first busloads of migrants from Texas arrived in Los Angeles on Wednesday, in what Mayor Karen Bass called a "despicable stunt" by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. According to Fox 11, some 40 migrants, who seemed to be families from Latin America and Haiti, were seen getting off two buses on their way to St. Anthony's Croatian Church. In a statement, Abbott argued that Texas officials were sending migrants wherever they wanted to go, pointing out that Los Angeles is a "self-declared sanctuary city." It is the most recent large metropolitan center in the United States to welcome migrants from Texas, following New York, Chicago, and Washington, DC in receiving tens of thousands of immigrants over the past year. The Republicansaid:
Texas’ small border towns remain overwhelmed and overrun by the thousands of people illegally crossing into Texas from Mexico because of President Biden’s refusal to secure the border. Los Angeles is a major city that migrants seek to go to, particularly now that its city leaders approved its self-declared sanctuary city status. Our border communities are on the frontlines of President Biden’s border crisis, and Texas will continue providing this much-needed relief until he steps up to do his job and secure the border.- The Republican
Bass, a Democrat, criticized Abbott for playing politics.
“It is abhorrent that an American elected official is using human beings as pawns in his cheap political games,” she said in a statement.

“Shortly after I took office, I directed City Departments to begin planning in the event Los Angeles was on the receiving end of a despicable stunt that Republican governors have grown so fond of.”
According to Bass, the arrival did not catch the city off guard. She claimed that emergency management, police, fire, and other departments were aware of the arriving migrants before they arrived in the city and worked rapidly with organizations to prepare. Bass stated:
Los Angeles is not a city motivated by hate or fear and we absolutely will not be swayed or moved by petty politicians playing with human lives. We are a city that seeks to treat all people with dignity and compassion.- Bass
Fox 11 stated that the migrants were expected to finally migrate from the chapel to shelters.
The migrants went into a church According to reports, the Los Angeles City Council just approved legislation that would make the city a "sanctuary city" for immigrants.
Sanctuary policies would be placed in the municipal code that prohibits “city resources, property, or personnel are used for federal immigration enforcement,” according to the City Council.
Over the last year, Texas officials have directed more than 21,000 migrants to towns across the country.
