In a world where physical interaction is limited, online communities are even more important. @drhalasabry, an emergency doctor and leader of the Physician Moms Facebook Group is at the heart of bringing people together. I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Hala 2 years ago in Los Angeles during a community roundtable. She helps connect moms working in healthcare find support through their community of more than 70,000 members. Dr. Hala recently created the Physician Moms COVID19 Subgroup on Facebook to help doctors and physicians around the world learn from each other’s experiences, including sharing resources to ensure patients have adequate supplies and information. She, along with other physicians, has worked closely with medical professionals in Italy, one of the hardest hit regions, to learn how to better prepare. I’ve always been so impressed by Dr. Hala’s commitment as a medical professional and community leader. She is a true #HealthcareHero. ❤

The wildfires in California have been catastrophic for so many – but I’m inspired to see how people are supporting each other. Husband and wife team Thao and Vince founded @luckyonesranch in 2011, an animal sanctuary in Vacaville home to horses, donkeys, llamas, goats, sheep, pigs and many more. In the early hours of August 19th, Thao quickly alerted her online community on Facebook asking for help to evacuate her animals. In the middle of the night, volunteers and complete strangers showed up and helped successfully evacuate dozens of animals to safety. They were just in time – the LNU Lightning Complex Fire swept through their beloved ranch, home and workshop shortly afterwards. Since then, the community has rallied together – creating a meal train for Thao and Vince, forming a pig-wrangling team to find their lost pig Swiney, and hosting several fundraisers for the organization – all on Facebook. They’ve been able to relocate their animals to seven different foster homes as they work on raising funds to rebuild and return to their Vacaville location. My thoughts are with everyone affected by these devastating fires – and all the heroes going the extra mile to help.

Just went LIVE with Michelle Nunn to talk about how COVID-19 is hurting the most vulnerable people around the world – and women and girls even more. Michelle is president and CEO of @careorg, which has been providing humanitarian relief for more than 75 years. Last summer, @Tom_bernthal and I had the honor of joining her team in Jordan, where we witnessed CARE’s incredible work firsthand. Today, Michelle and I discussed the important work CARE is doing to not only help prevent the spread of COVID-19, but also to tackle gender-based violence in this pandemic. I hope Michelle’s work inspires you as much as it inspires me – and that our conversation provides you with practical ways to support those who need it most.

I am lucky enough that my work means I meet amazing women all the time – and I love to share their stories when I do. I know that, quite rightly, people’s thoughts are on the COVID-19 outbreak and what we all need to do to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe, but it is also #WomensHistoryMonth and I don’t want to let it pass without sharing some of the stories of the women I’ve met recently. One of them is Bami Kuteyi, owner of @bambam_boogie Dance Fitness studio, who I met during a trip to London in January. She told me how she left her job in tech to pursue her passion for fitness – and somewhere along the way, launched a global movement. Bami started out by teaching classes and creating instructional videos on Facebook. Her Facebook business page has helped her increase her reach by nearly 300,000 potential customers and boosted her sales. Bami’s dream is to expand the Bam Bam Boogie movement to other global locations by training more instructors and through online classes so anyone, anywhere can join in on the fun. Her story shows the importance of owning who you are, and most importantly, doing whatever it takes to achieve your dreams.

My thoughts and sympathies are with all those whose lives have been affected by COVID-19, especially those who have lost loved ones. I always think about the doctors, nurses and other medical professionals at times like these too. The outbreak is putting a huge strain on them – and their families – all over the world. I come from a family of doctors – my dad is a doctor and so are my brother and sister – so I know first-hand the huge pressures they face, the selflessness of their work, and the deep sense of duty they feel, especially during crises. When you grow up with a doctor as a parent, you also know the concern that comes with having a loved one who can be exposed to risk while helping others. That’s why I wanted to share two quick stories – about how medical professionals are looking out for each other, and how people are showing their appreciation for them. There is a fantastic group on Facebook called @show_me_your_stethoscope – a community of nurses that has grown to more than 600,000 members over the last five years. Their motto is “nurses take care of patients, we take care of nurses.” I first learned about them in 2017. During the COVID-19 outbreak, they are posting in the group to keep each other up to date on the facts, share tips on hygiene and how to best educate their communities, and provide each other with love and support as they prepare to be on the frontlines of the response as the situation escalates. Last month, a group in Singapore called @standupforsg found a way to show their appreciation for the medical professionals dealing with the outbreak by writing handwritten messages of thanks and encouragement and posting pictures of them on Facebook with the hashtag #braveheartsg. In a matter of days there were hundreds of messages and they were being publicly praised by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. They have passed these messages and other things, from candy bars to thousands of boxes of hand sanitizers, directly to medical staff in Singapore. To all the doctors, nurses and others on the frontline of this emergency – thank you. We are so grateful for everything you are doing.

Three years ago, my dear friend, Nicola Mendelsohn (@nicolamen) who is also Facebook’s Vice President of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, was diagnosed with an incurable disease – follicular lymphoma (FL). When Nicola first found out, she was devastated. Hopes she had for the future – like becoming a grandmother – suddenly seemed hard to reach. But Nicola, with the support of friends, family and others, has steadfastly and heroically fought back. After 14 treatments of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, Nicola is in remission. Every step of the way, she found strength in connection – from her colleagues at Facebook to members of Living with Follicular Lymphoma, a Facebook Group she helps run. Today, she is launching the Follicular Lymphoma Foundation (@follicularlymphomafoundation) to help find a cure and support others who are struggling with the disease. Nicola’s resilience is an inspiration to me and everyone who works alongside her at Facebook. I’m so proud of you, Nicola.
